Spring Blog 2025
I’m pleased to say that winter is long behind us, and Spring has sprung, and we are officially into ‘summertime’… As such the plants are starting to show signs of life and Munch is finally voluntarily having the occasional mooch in the garden. (The fact it was looking like a few bombs had gone off due to local winter storm damage is by the by, I definitely need to get proactive outdoors this year! Ha-ha)
Munch has been shedding so much fur that all the chairs around the house were becoming tortoiseshell! So, it’s time to get her brushed regularly and make sure her coat is nicely sorted for the warmer months.
Similarly, it’s coming up to flea season, so I always like to get the first dose done before they get going properly, as it helps get into the system before they can, as ever, I recommend Frontline plus.. See my previous blog about cat fleas for more information.
Now…. It’s possibly something every cat owner will encounter at some point the upper window escape scare! Munch has a habit of climbing on the window frame on the upper windows, be aware as with this lovely warm weather I’m sure we all like to leave upstairs windows open… she’s never actually jumped but been right on the edge of the rim before now! These days I leave them ajar just enough that she can’t ever fit through!
No real masterful advice here but be aware!! lol
Other things to hold into consideration as we come to warmer weather are:
Toxic plants spring bulbs … I’ve yet to see a situation where a cat has ingested or been adversely affected by digging up plant bulbs, but it has been heard of, so if your cat gets mysteriously ill, its worthy of consideration.
Decking and chemicals … I’ve got decking and I regularly stain/ oil it. I’ve never known Munch to get too close to me/it when its being done.
Cats have an incredible sense of smell… comparable with dogs due to the existence of their Jacobson organ allowing them to extra perceive smells as taste etc. and referred to as the Flehmen response. If you want more info, read here : https://www.petmd.com/cat/general-health/cat-sneering-what-flehmen-response and as such tend to know to avoid toxic stuff on the whole.
Of course, talking about the Flehmen response brings us nicely to another spring/summer consideration: Female cats coming into season!
Munch has been a lot feistier and livelier of late, and significantly more adventurous than prior months, and despite having been spayed she still likes to scent mark around the garden causing visitations from the local toms. So don’t forget, if you aren’t looking to host a new little litter this summer, maybe keep an eye on your mollies at the moment!
Which also trips nicely along to my next thought of late.
Missing cats!!
I see more and more appeals on social media for cats that are lost or are appearing at cat friendly homes looking a bit worse for wear.
Obviously at this time of year Tomcats tend to be on the prowl and can go wandering for weeks on end chasing interesting scents, hunting down ladies and marking a wider domain, but if an animal is looking in need of help and nutrition what is the best course of action to take?
It turns out there is quite a bit to consider about this question and as such this will be the subject of my next blog post which will hopefully be available soon.
Until then… Have a great rest of Spring, let’s hope Summer is equivalently lovely and clement as the last few months.
