Cat Fleas: The never ending battle
We all know that if your cat likes to prowl outside there’s a good chance at some point they will end up catching fleas.
I have had this issue with Munch many times, especially as there are foxes in close proximity to our home. She has caught some super strength fleas in the past and once they are established in your home they are very tricky to evict.
With the weather due to break within the next day or so, (at time of writing) and the rain due to return, this will most likely create an influx of fleas as they thrive on humidity and need moisture to reproduce and hatch. So make sure you are up to scratch (haha) with your anti-flea routine and ensure your furry friends’ flea collar is fresh.
Happy Toms recommends Frontline Green spot-on treatment, its invaluable during flea season and seems to handle even the fox grade cat fleas Munch regularly picks up.
If you end up with a full infestation, (as I have had before thanks to lesser flea treatments) you can always get a flea jab from your local vets. Whilst expensive it is the most effective method of cracking a full outbreak, as it prevents the eggs from being able to hatch (I believe it does this by making your cats blood a carrier for something that sterilises the fleas?). This usually costs in excess of £100 plus vet assessment fees, so very much a last resort if operating on a budget.
If you would like to know more there is a good article on petMD here.
Your local vets will be able to advise on all specifics in relation to this if you do want more information. But all the more reason to be aware of the major threat periods and ensure you are regularly flea treating your cat during the warmer months. (March to Oct depending on weather conditions).
And one last bit of advice, remember flea collars have a definite shelf life! Both on the shop shelves and once popped on your pet!
Happy Toms don’t have any particular one we recommend, and flea collars are not without risk. Again petMD has some good information on this subject here.
Much love and Kitty Fun!
